PORT-AU-PRINCE,
Haiti (sentinel.ht) – Unidentified gunmen shot at the
premises of Radio Television Kiskeya in the early hours
of Tuesday morning. The incident takes place in a
climate of a tense electoral crisis, which has seen
threats launched against journalists.
At about 1 a.m.,
bullets hit the building’s main façade, gate, and a
front door window. No casualties were reported.
The Haitian National Police (PNH) say they have
opened an investigation and a forensic team collected
evidence later that morning. A justice of the peace took
account of the findings.
The former President of the National Assembly,
Senator Simon Desras, had told members of the press
weeks earlier that a plan was being hatched at the Prime
Minister’s office to silence certain media.
Radio Television Zenith has also been the subject
of death threats. On Fri., Nov. 27, 2015, men competing
for the mayoral seat in Croix-des-Bouquets came with
gasoline canisters with the aim of burning down the
station.
Both radio and news agencies have been covering
the electoral process and the allegations of fraud that
have accompanied it. Zenith FM regularly covers protests
that have had a daily frequency, as they call for an
investigation.
The United Nations and a group of diplomats calling
themselves the “Core Group” in Haiti had not commented
on the threats and attacks. The totalitarian regime of
President Michel Martelly has also been mum.
